The whole school was invited to identify ways they conserve water at home and at school. Paper drops of water with pledges were displayed in school entry. September 2013
The 4th grade Green Kids seminar created signs for all classroom sinks and hall fountains to encourage students and staff to conserve water. Fifth Graders conducted an erosion and run off survey of the school year in the science unit and identified areas for improvement. The 4th grade Green Kids seminar stenciled the storm drains on school property to remind the community that all drains lead to the Chesapeake Bay. |

The 4th grade Green Team seminar created signs for classroom light switches to encourage students and staff to reduce energy consumption.
The 4th Grade Green Team monitored classrooms to recognize rooms that turned off lights and equipment when not in use. Classrooms with the best habits were awarded a light bulb to display in their classrooms. Classroom jobs include an light switch monitor to turn off lights and projectors when leaving the classroom. The 4th Grade Green Team create a list of energy savings tips and read them on the announcements to increase energy use awareness. The whole school was invited to take action in the community to help make the school, home, and community a "greener" place to live and work. Ideas were displayed on a leaf and hung in the front lobby of the school. September 2012 The whole school was invited to turn off their lights for one hour on March 29th in recognition of Earth Hour. |

The entire school recycles paper in the classrooms and offices using blue trashcans with a recycling logo. 5th graders are assigned to recycle cans in offices and supportive classrooms.
TRES students are encouraged to reduce their lunch trash by packing a waste free lunch each Wednesday. The PTA supported a program called "Bash the Trash" to create a "junk-yard" band experience for the entire school. The 4th Grade Green Team encouraged the entire student body to recycle their juice pouches at lunchtime. The 4th Grade Green Team created recycling containers for glue sticks and collects the contents weekly. The 4th Grade Green Team advertised in the school newsletter and created collection boxes to recycle inkjet and toner cartridges. Students from each grade used art objectives to decorate bird house poles that were erected near our Native Plant garden, 2015
Parents, students, and teachers joined forces in renovating an old flower bed and replanting with native plants. 4th Graders participated in raising and releasing blue gills 2013-14, 2014-15 4th Graders participated in raising and releasing terrapins in 2011-12 2nd Graders raised and released butterflies yearly. 4th Graders created cement oyster reef balls 2010-2014 4th Graders raised and released rainbow trout in 2010. |

TRES began participating in an Air Quality Flag program in the fall of 2015. Colored flags are displayed indicating the air quality and information on outdoor exercise suggestions was shared with the community.
Each spring and fall, students and staff walk or run outside on Wednesdays as recess begins. 449 students participated in 2012-13, 63 students and 3 staff members participated in Healthy Howard's Fruity Fridays during 2012-13 Jump Rope for Heart is an annual event at our school to encourage physical activity and to raise money for the American Heart Association. 60 students and 3 staff members participated in Jump Rope for Heart in 2013 and in 2014. 10 students and 2 staff members participated in Girls on the Run to encourage outdoor activity and endurance in 2012-13 Each year students participate in activities and events to encourage physical activity outside during Field Day. Kindergarteners created posters to encourage handwashing and good hygiene during the cold season. The whole school participated in an interactive play to learn about healthy eating habits. The whole school participated in a Tech Time Out to reduce screen time, February 2014. Our Media Center has live plants, promoting healthier air quality. |

Master Gardeners have worked for many years with our 5th graders in a variety of outdoor lessons to plant riparian forest buffers and evaluating the school grounds to identify areas of concern, wildlife, and plants on the property.
Each fall, DNR presents programs on horseshoe crabs, the watershed, and oysters in the Chesapeake Bay to 4th graders studying the Chesapeake Bay. Alicia Moore from the Howard County Bureau of Environmental Services presented a recycling program to encourage students to recycle in the cafeteria. September, 2013. Master Gardeners presented a program to 2nd graders on plants in the spring of 2014. In 2013 and 2014, Days of Taste presented lessons using local produce to 4th grade students to introduce a variety of foods and increase their understanding of nutrition. Provides energy conservation education on the importance of conserving energy. March 21, 2014. WSSC has supported TRES's oyster reef ball project for many years and delivers the school's finished products to the Chesapeake Bay to bay restoration. Kaiser Permanente presented the Amazing Food Detective interactive play to the school to encourage healthy eating habits. |
